Last week I came back to Vienna on a Lufthansa flight via Düsseldorf. Coming back home from a holiday is never much fun, but I like flying so that’s always something to look forward to. Unfortunately not when things go wrong for 8 hours straight.

The asian vegetarians
A group of 7 Germans, who where actually supposed to be on a flight to Frankfurt, which was delayed because of the heavy snowfall and somehow made them change plans and get on the flight to Düsseldorf (yay!).
To start with, a middle aged couple, who scored the front row and more legroom (she was sooo short). When I checked in and asked for the emergency row all I got to hear was “You NOT tall, there are people who are 2 feet tall” And I was just thinking “But, are they on this flight? And do you really think that (she was looking at my Austrian passport at the time) I know how tall 2 feet is?”
Secondly, a young couple, I guess quite ok. And three elderly grandmas. Very worried about Asian vegetarian food. And somehow the ordinary second food choice, which was vegetable pasta was not enough for them. But it got worse – 5 of those people switched seats, so that when they where saying how they’d been promised Asian vegetarian food at the airport, the flight attended wouldn’t find the right seats. It was like a cabaret.

The smell sock from behind
OK. I like stretching and putting my feet up too (see my emergency row request, and yes I’m 182cm tall), but I try not to hit other people’s elbow from behind, as my lovely Non-Arabic speaking seat neighbor from behind. How do I know he doesn’t speak arabic? Because his tv screen would only talk to him in Arabic and I seriously must have believed hitting the screen (aka my back) would beat the Arabic out of it. The flight attended was able to fix that problem, not the smelly sock though..

The big one
So when the time came to simply plug in my earphones and slip into another world through a movie I got to experience real Lufthansa technician’s handy work. My foldable screen, which came out of my armrest was facing the other way. Facing the Asian vegetarians in the row in front. AND it didn’t work. The flight attendant was pretty speechless herself and then explained that this screen was broken the other day and now they must have “fixed it”. I just really wonder how you can fix a broken tv and not try turning it on and not see it’s screwed on the wrong way? I honestly hope they have different technicians working on the plane itself and it’s interior…

I’m not saying that Lufthansa is all bad, it was way better than my flight to NY with LOT (hardly any food, a beamer for everyone to watch the same movie there and on the way back and earplugs that are just cables to let through the air and the sound..bend them and the volume goes down). But, there where definitively some things that went wrong for me, no 1 and 2 not being Lufthansa’s fault. Still, I’m not sure personally if I’ll fly with Lufthansa again any time soon.
